2003 Grand Canyon State Games…Sportsman Team Challenge

By Tom Kampert, AZOD Staff Writer

On March 29th, the Grand Canyon State Games were held at Ben Avery Shooting Range North of Phoenix.  This was a team shoot that was comprised of three and two-man teams shooting .22 handguns, .22 rifles, center fire handguns and shotguns.  Targets shot during the rifle and handgun portion of the competition were all metal reactive type targets set up at ranges out to 90 yards.  Targets ranged in size from about ten inches across to as small as one inch with the smallest targets being at the longest ranges.  A difficult course of fire for even the more experienced and accomplished shooters.

12 targets in about as many seconds!

From the shotgun event

The shotgun portion of the competition was no less challenging.  This portion really required that the teams be just that…a team.  Coordination was absolutely necessary, especially when shooting the “Flurry” event.  This event starts with the simultaneous launch of five clay birds followed by a single target launched every 3/4 of a second there after until a total of fifty targets had been launched.  It became obvious which teams had their “act” together by the number of targets that passed over their heads while they were frantically trying to reload.

My day was spent observing the team fielded by Randall’s Firearms.  Their team was made up of employees of that shop, AZOD’s own Gary McCraw, Harlan Horita and Lowell Warnhoff.  The team comprised of all three of these shooters took Second Place silver medal in the three-man event.  Gary and Harlan exceeded their three-man scores and took a gold First Place for the two-man event.

Listed below are the final results of Saturday’s competition:

TWO-MAN TEAM SPORTSMAN DIVISION

WINNER:  RANDALL’S II

 2ND        TEAM RONIN

 3RD        DOS HOMBRES

 4TH                SUBCRITICAL

JUNIOR DIVISION

2ND      TEAM DILLON JUNIOR

All in all, everyone had a great time regardless of how high, or low, their final score was.  It was more about having fun with a great bunch of people than about winning.  If having fun was the goal, then everyone came away a winner. –AZOD-
