Tonto Natural Bridge

  If you are looking for something to do this weekend, consider a trip to a unique Arizona state park.  The Tonto Natural Bridge, on Hwy 87 is about ten miles north of  Payson.  It is one of  the few places still open due the fire or fire danger. At least for now.

  Prospector David Gowan is credited with discovering the natural bridge back in 1877.  He hid for three days from Apaches in one of the caves. He liked it so well that he brought over family from Scotland and claimed squatter’s rights.

   The bridge is 183 feet high with a 400 foot tunnel. The tunnel is 150 feet wide at the widest places. It is thought that forces of lava, an inland sea and erosion over the ages helped to create this natural wonder. There are three short trials, about ½ mile long but they are not for sissy’s. Bring your hiking boots and some water.

   If you want to see it better hurry. It is one of the parks slated for closure due to budget cuts. As of November 1^st it will be closed indefinitely.  For more information check out this website.    http://www.pr.state.az.us/parkhtml/tonto.html
