Product Review - Montana Black Gold Trap Door Rest

The “Trap Door” rest from Montana Black Gold is one of the many fall-away rests on the market today.  As with all fall-away rests, the idea for the rest is to drop out of the way when the bow is fired and prevent fletching contact with the rest.  The big idea with fall away rests is “clearance” for the arrow.  However, unlike the other fall-away rests that use a string or tube connected to the cable to raise the rest into position and allow gravity to cause the rest to fall away, the TRAP DOOR is activated by inertia and does not require a string or cable.  In addition, the rest stays in shooting position until the bow is fired.

TUNING:  Although the trap door does not come with micro-tuning indexing, it does allow the bow and rest to be tuned relatively easily as the bow does not need to be at full draw for the rest to be into position.  I use a metal ruler marked in 32nds of an inch to adjust the rest and record the optimum position for future reference if the rest is ever bumped out of tune.   Patience is required while tuning this rest due to the fact that the launcher can move up or down and in or out if not secured.  You need to pay special attention while tuning to be sure that the launcher is in position.

CLEARANCE:  The TRAP DOOR provides outstanding clearance for my arrows.  I use a powder test to determine if the fletchings are contacting the rest, and I have observed no fletching contact in any of my tests.  In addition, the TRAP DOOR comes with adjustable tension for personal preference and additional clearance.

PERFORMANCE:  I was surprised at the difference in my grouping after using the TRAP DOOR.  My groups are continually getting smaller, and I have had to adjust my practice shooting due to arrow damage while shooting at the same spot.  Although some credit for the improvement us due to improved form and continued practice, I do credit the TRAP DOOR as well.  In addition, the rest has never failed to fall away and worked the same in Arizona 100 degree temperatures as in 15 degree temperatures in South Dakota.
