Expandable vs. Fixed - the 'Blade Question' Todd Hulm Wow! I wish I had nickel for every opinion I have heard concerning fixed blade and expandable broadheads. It seems that the real issue at hand is performance, obviously, but as obvious as that may seem, the question really goes quite deep. Although expandable broadheads are inherently more accurate (they have less area to create drag, etc….) their consistent performance is not guaranteed. On the other side of the arrow, the fixed blade head will certainly perform well, but many people experience severe difficulties in getting their fixed blade heads to fly with the accuracy demonstrated by their field points. It would seem that the most popular decision would be to meet in the middle, but that isn’t possible, really, either the blades are fixed or not. So, where does that leave us? Well, I think it is really quite simple. Whether an expandable blade performs correctly every time or whether a fixed blade is as accurate as your target points isn’t really the issue. The real issue is CONFIDENCE! YOUR CONFIDENCE. In my experience, I believe both types of broadheads are effective. And, both types of broadheads have some drawbacks, but the individual hunter is the one that has to determine which type of head suits their hunting and which type of head is going to give them the confidence they need when they are facing that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at a trophy animal. Personally, I put a great deal of time and effort into tuning both my bow and my arrows. With that, I am able to used fixed blade heads and have them shoot right on top of my field points. In fact, I make no adjustments between my 3-D competition set-up and my hunting set-up. Needless to say, I am quite confident in my fixed blade heads and they suit my style of hunting perfectly. On the other hand, not every archer shoots a couple of times a week nor have they been able to spend time with knowledgeable bow technicians in order to learn how to tune a bow or arrows on their OWN. For some, the difference in impact point on a fixed blade head simply is a problem with which they have no way of coping. If an expandable blade solves this problem, so be it. I firmly believe an arrow placed correctly is far more important than the broadhead one chooses. Finally, I would simply encourage every archer to spend some time determining which broadhead they will use and also encourage them to research the various options available to them. After that, I would simply say they need to practice as much as possible in an effort to develop the utmost confidence in their ability to place the arrow where they want it. If they can do that, the rest will take care of itself.
