Fishing
with a Bow We were fishing for crappie on a quiet Lake
Roosevelt cove one evening when a glow
came from around the corner. We
watched as the shape of a boat emerged from behind the brightness. This
thing had headlights and a spotlight shining into the water. “There
goes a big one,” someone on the boat exclaimed. A silhouetted archer
came into view and we could see the arrow go into the water. Attaboy’s
and laughter followed so we assumed that he connected. They were having
a blast. The next day we saw the boat. It had been customized with a
shooting platform and a special rack for the bows. These guys were
serious carp shooters. Of course a specially outfitted boat is not
necessary and bow fishing is good for daytime too. It’s a different
type of sport but one you may like to try.
There are several different types of fishing
arrows available for use on the market today. Probably the most common
and easiest to find is the solid fiberglass shaft which most archery
shops carry for around $2.00. There is also solid aluminum and aluminum
composite fishing arrows which range in price from around $6.00 to
$12.00 A stainless steel leader with a 1/0 swivel on the leader for
attaching the arrow is a common setup.
The idea is to keep the line away from around your bow hand and
arm when shooting. You can buy a cable package from MUZZY that has all
the goodies including instructions.
You'll need it to because your arrows will have to be recabled
after a couple dozen shoots An arrow shoot can be effective through several
feet of water depending on the bows poundage and arrow weight.
Most setups, have an effective range of 4 to 5 feet of shooting
depth at a distance of around
10 to 12 feet. A pair of polarized fishing glasses is a must for
bow fishing. The rule of
thumb for shooting a fish is hold 4 inches low for each foot of water at
10 feet away. This will
take some practice getting use to.
Carp are the main target for bow fisherman.
Be sure to check the regulations before you go out slinging
sticks at fish. Bow fishing is a lot of fun and will give you something
to 'hunt' during the nontraditional hunting months. Some of the best
action of the year occurs in the spring so give it try, but be
forewarned its ADDICTIVE. Team AZOD
